Lagoon of Lumière: a mosaic of light by the water
On a gentle hill by the water lies an Italian village of pale houses with terracotta roofs. At the top stands a church with a stone bell tower and a large dome, surrounded by slender, dark cypresses that rise between the façades like exclamation marks. Green trees and shrubs fill the spaces between the houses right down to the shoreline.
The lake in the foreground mirrors the whole scene in shimmering flecks of light and colour. Behind the village a dark, almost midnight-blue slope rises up, making the pale houses glow all the more. Everything is built from thousands of small, mosaic-like brushstrokes in midnight blue, olive green, ochre and cream, which merge from a distance into a rich, decorative landscape.
Decorative and calming
The technique recalls the landscapes of Gustav Klimt: flat, detailed and almost like embroidery. There is no sky in sight, only village, hill and water, which gives the piece an enclosed, tranquil mood. It evokes warm southern European summer evenings.
Where it works best
In a living room, dining room or study this piece brings calm and depth. Navy, olive green, ochre and brass suit it well. Combine it with dark wood, linen and ceramics for a Mediterranean feel, or choose a black frame for a crisper look.
